KENT, Wash. - A 60-year-old drag racing driver became the third person to die at an NHRA event this year when he crashed after crossing the finish line during his semifinal heat at the Northwest Nationals on Sunday.Mark Niver of Phoenix was competing in the Top Alcohol dragster class in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing series, the top feeder circuit for the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing series.The NHRA said it's investigating the accident and extended its sympathies to Niver's family. A spokesman for the association declined comment when asked for more information about what happened, saying the investigation had just started.

nhra Kent, July 12, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Sunday the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing series took a tragic turn when it witnessed the death of 60-year-old racer Mark Niver who was racing a Top Alcohol dragster. The driver died after completing the semi-final racetrack. He died when the parachute implanted in his car failed to work properly and reaped of the car. Mark Niver who was riding at a speed of 271 mph could hardly manage time to get out of the car. The car shot off at the end of the runway and hit the protective netting.
The accident happened at around 2:15 p.m. and the event was brought to a hold. The officials of the King County Sheriff’s department came at the sight to investigate the crash. Although the department confirmed the death of Mark Niver to media sources it declined to reveal any more information on the matter. The exact cause of the death of the racer is yet to be revealed. After the game resumed Cory McClenathan won the Top Fuel title while Tim Wilkerson got the Funny Car race trophy. The Pro Stock race trophy was handed over to Greg Anderson.
The death of Mark Niver is the second within a month this year. In the month of June 58-year-old Neal Parker from Millville died of a head injury during a qualifying round at the NHRA SuperNationals that was held at New Jersey raceway. Neal Parker died when his alcohol-fueled funny car crashed during the race. The death of Mark Niver has once again led to the questioning of the safety of race track.
